How Do You Feel Your Feelings?
Updated: Nov 18, 2019
Hello, I’m Holly Jo Martin, a Certified Life Coach living in the Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona.
I have a question for you.
Do you feel out of control? Are you trying to avoid uncomfortable feelings by overeating, overdrinking, over shopping, or binge watching movies one after another?
Hey, don't beat yourself up.
As a human, avoiding negative feelings it is a normal response. In fact, there are three main ways we humans handle negative feelings.
We avoid them with distractions like eating, drinking, you name it. That usually leads to more negative feelings.
We can also resist negative feelings. But, that just creates more tension and the negative feeling doesn't go away. It is like holding a beach ball under the water. Pressure builds as it becomes harder and harder to keep the negative feeling bottled up.
The third way is to react to negative feelings: like yelling, kicking, screaming. Most people think that is what feeling an emotion looks like, but it isn't. That is just reacting to it. I call this emotional childhood. We learned how to react to negative emotions as a child and never moved on from there.
I teach my clients a new way to respond to negative feelings to achieve emotional maturity. We do this by allowing the negative feeling to vibrate through our body. This can be done without any outward action or movement. It takes about 60-90 second to vibrate through the body and then you can move on.
